    Call Me Caitlyn: Making and making over the 'authentic' transgender body in Anglo-American popular culture

    A conception of transgender identity as an ‘authentic’ gendered core ‘trapped’ within a mismatched corporeality, and made tangible through corporeal transformations, has attained unprecedented legibility in contemporary Anglo-American media. Whilst pop-cultural articulations of this discourse have received some scholarly attention, the question of why this 'wrong body' paradigm has solidified as the normative explanation for gender transition within the popular media remains underexplored. This paper argues that this discourse has attained cultural pre-eminence through its convergence with a broader media and commercial zeitgeist, in which corporeal alteration and maintenance are perceived as means of accessing one’s ‘authentic’ self. I analyse the media representations of two transgender celebrities: Caitlyn Jenner and Nadia Almada, alongside the reality TV show TRANSform Me, exploring how these women’s gender transitions have been discursively aligned with a cultural imperative for all women, cisgender or trans, to display their authentic femininity through bodily work. This demonstrates how established tropes of authenticity-via-bodily transformation, have enabled transgender to become culturally legible through the wrong body trope. Problematically, I argue, this process has worked to demarcate ideals of ‘acceptable’ transgender subjectivity: self-sufficient, normatively feminine, and eager to embrace the possibilities for happiness and social integration provided by the commercial domain

    En la Ă©poca de primera de 1988 se realizaron ensayos en frijol para determinar el nivel crĂ­tico Ăłptimo para el control de Empoasca spp., basado en el muestreo del porcentaje de hojas infestadas con ninfas. TambiĂ©n se evaluĂł la eficacia de este muestreo comparĂĄndolo con un muestreo absoluto usando una trampa de cuña. Se utilizĂł un diseño experimentaÂĄ de bloques completos al azar con dos localidades, tres repeticiones en cada lugar y cinco tratamientos; aplicaciones de insecticida a 0, 15, 30 y 45% de hojas Infestadas y un testigo sin aplicaciĂłn. A cada tratamiento se le aplicĂł dimetoato al alcanzar su nivel crĂ­tico. El tamaño de cada parcela fue de 49 m2 y para la cosecha se utilizĂł una ĂĄrea Ăștil de 4 m2 del centro de cada parcela. El anĂĄlisis combinado de varianza indica que hubo diferencias significativas (P≀0.01) en rendimiento entre los tratamientos. Los rendimientos de 0 y 5% (1.1 y 1.2 t/ha, respectivamente) fueron significativamente mĂĄs altos que el testigo (0.8 tm/ha), no asĂ­ para los tratamientos 30% y 45 %. La correlaciĂłn entre el porcentaje de hojas infestadas por ninfas y el nĂșmero de ninfas determinado por el muestreo absoluto fue significativa (r = 0.78) en Corral Falso y San JerĂłnimo (r = 036). El tratamiento con 15% de hojas infestadas obtuvo los mayores beneficios netos. La tasa de retorno marginal para este nivel crĂ­tico fue 15 y 20% para San JerĂłnimo y Corral Falso, respectivamente

    World radiocommunication conference 12 : implications for the spectrum eco-system

    Spectrum allocation is once more a key issue facing the global telecommunications industry. Largely overlooked in current debates, however, is the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC). Decisions taken by WRC shape the future roadmap of the telecommunications industry, not least because it has the ability to shape the global spectrum allocation framework. In the debates of WRC-12 it is possible to identify three main issues: enhancement of the international spectrum regulatory framework, regulatory measures required to introduce Cognitive Radio Systems (CRS) technologies; and, additional spectrum allocation to mobile service. WRC-12 eventually decided not to change the current international radio regulations with regard to the first two issues and agreed to the third issue. The main implications of WRC-12 on the spectrum ecosystem are that most of actors are not in support of the concept of spectrum flexibility associated with trading and that the concept of spectrum open access is not under consideration. This is explained by the observation that spectrum trading and spectrum commons weaken state control over spectrum and challenge the main principles and norms of the international spectrum management regime. In addition, the mobile allocation issue has shown the lack of conformity with the main rules of the regime: regional spectrum allocation in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) three regions, and the resistance to the slow decision making procedures. In conclusion, while the rules and decision-making procedures of the international spectrum management regime were challenged in the WRC-12, the main principles and norms are still accepted by the majority of countries

    Coronary heart disease is the single largest killer of Americans so improved means of detecting risk factors before arterial obstructions appear are expected to lead to a improvement in quality of life with a reduced cost. This paper introduces a new approach to 3-D reconstruction of individual particles based on statistical modeling from a sparse set of 2-D projection images. This paper introduces a new approach to 3-D reconstruction of individual particles based on statistical modeling from a sparse set of 2-D projection images. The method is in contrast to the current state of practice where reconstruction is performed via signal processing or Bayesian methods that use averaged images acquired from an ensemble of particles. As such, this new approach has its impetus in use for novel diagnostic tests such as LDL and HDL particle shape characterization. The approach is also expected to have uses in areas such as quality assurance for drug delivery nano-technologies and for general proteomic studies. The individual particle reconstruction algorithm is based on a hidden Markov model. Higher order Markov chain statistics, which are generated from the a priori model of the target of interest, can be derived from traditional methods such as single particle reconstruction and/or the underlying physical properties of the particle. By placing the reconstruction voxel space at a 45° angle to the projection image, 4-passes of the HMM processing can be performed from a single image. Reconstruction results from a simple model and a single projection image resulted in better than 98% reconstruction accuracy as compared to the original target

    Assessing the benefits of stereoscopic displays to visual search: methodology and initial findings

    Visual search is a task that is carried out in a number of important security and health related scenarios (e.g., X-ray baggage screening, radiography). With recent and ongoing developments in the technology available to present images to observers in stereoscopic depth, there has been increasing interest in assessing whether depth information can be used in complex search tasks to improve search performance. Here we outline the methodology that we developed, along with both software and hardware information, in order to assess visual search performance in complex, overlapping stimuli that also contained depth information. In doing so, our goal is to foster further research along these lines in the future. We also provide an overview with initial results of the experiments that we have conducted involving participants searching stimuli that contain overlapping objects presented on different depth planes to one another. Thus far, we have found that depth information does improve the speed (but not accuracy) of search, but only when the stimuli are highly complex and contain a significant degree of overlap. Depth information may therefore aid real-world search tasks that involve the examination of complex, overlapping stimuli

    Net neutrality discourses: comparing advocacy and regulatory arguments in the United States and the United Kingdom

    Telecommunications policy issues rarely make news, much less mobilize thousands of people. Yet this has been occurring in the United States around efforts to introduce "Net neutrality" regulation. A similar grassroots mobilization has not developed in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in Europe. We develop a comparative analysis of U.S. and UK Net neutrality debates with an eye toward identifying the arguments for and against regulation, how those arguments differ between the countries, and what the implications of those differences are for the Internet. Drawing on mass media, advocacy, and regulatory discourses, we find that local regulatory precedents as well as cultural factors contribute to both agenda setting and framing of Net neutrality. The differences between national discourses provide a way to understand both the structural differences between regulatory cultures and the substantive differences between policy interpretations, both of which must be reconciled for the Internet to continue to thrive as a global medium
